가평기념비를 캐나다 나이아가라에 세우다.

캐나다와 미국에서는 6.25 전쟁을 한국전쟁(Korean War) 또는 별명식으로 잊혀진 전쟁(Forgotten War)으로 표현한다. 캐나다 나이아가라에서 살아보면서 한국과의 연결고리를 이을 수 있는 가장 좋은 내용은 한국전 참전용사와의 관계를 정립하는 것으로 생각된다. 즉, 전몰된 참전용사를 기리고 아직 살아남은 용사들에 대한 예우를 해 주는 것이다. 그런데 우리 지역에 가평군으로부터 기념비를 세우고 싶다는 반가운 연락이 와서 본 프로젝트를 수행하였다. 바로 캐나다 현지에서 가칭 "가평승전기념비 설립 위원회"를 만들고, 첫 미팅을 코로나 팬데믹 기간인 2021년 9월 12일 나이아가라에서 5명(멀베리20외 4명)이 참석하여 시작하게 되었다. 아래 스케치는 초창기 준비위원들의 회의를 거쳐 만들어진 기념비의 랜더링 자료로 이를 바탕으로 초대장을 만든 것이다. 자세히 보면 설립위원들이 많은 노력으로 초창기 구상한 모양과 거의 동일하게 현재 세워진 기념비와 같음을 알 수 있을 것이다.

많은 우여곡절 끝에 2022년 6월 16일 제막식이 거행되었고, 이에 대한 주요 내용을 캐나다 현지 신문에서 게제되어 이를 영어 원문과 한국어로 번역하여 소개하고자 한다.

Korean War monument in Niagara Falls commemorates ‘one of Canada’s greatest, yet least known military achievements’ Korean War Gapyeong Battle Victory Monument unveiled at Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls By Ray SpiteriReview Reporter Thu., June 16, 2022     A monument to commemorate Canada’s achievement in the Korean War was unveiled during a ceremony at Fairview Cemetery, Thursday. Representatives of the Battle of Gapyeong Monument of Canada Committee, Korean Veterans Association of Canada, and Niagara Korean Association, alongside City of Niagara Falls staff, have been working since September to select the ideal site and arrange for the monument to be created and installed. The memorial consists of a large granite monument donated by Gapyeong County Mayor Sungki Kim, and shipped from Korea, three bronze plaques, and three, nine-metre flag poles. It’s one of 30 memorials that have been donated to communities of Korean veterans around the world. “We want to remember, forever, the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers during the Korean War, in particular during the Gapyeong battle — we want to respect and to express our appreciation to the Korean War veterans of Canada for their devotion and service,” said Kim through a translator. “Korea’s development today is because of you. On behalf of 64,000 Gapyeong citizens, I would like to send our special thanks to you. I hope that the Korean War Gapyeong Battle Victory Monument here will make sure that a special friendship and blood alliance will be strengthened between Canada and Korea, between Niagara Falls and Gapyeong, and between Korean Canadians and Canadian people in the future.” Mark Richardson, manager of cemetery services for the City of Niagara Falls, said the monument will become a historical symbol, acknowledging that Korean and Canadian forces fought united in the battles of the Korean War. “Very soon this great tribute will be unveiled and shared for generations, serving as an ideal site to preserve, honour and commemorate those who bravely fought in the Korean War, and to ensure their sacrifice is no longer forgotten,” he said. The monument is located adjacent to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 51 Cenotaph, at the Stanley Avenue cemetery. Consul General Deuk Hwan Kim said the Battle of Gapyeong is “one of Canada’s greatest, yet least known military achievements. “The momentous victory in this battle is a testament to the bravery and tenacity of Canadian soldiers. Indeed, the Battle of Gapyeong changed the course of the war, as well as Korea’s history,” he said. “The government and the people of Republic of Korea will never forget the sacrifice and devotion. I have no doubt that their harrowing achievements laid the foundation for the enduring friendship our two countries share.” Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said the city is “very proud” to host the monument at Fairview Cemetery and thanked all those involved in contributing to the project, which will be a “long-term reminder, signifying the uniting of Korean and Canadian forces. “It will become a symbol of peace and friendship of our community for generations to come,” he said. More than 27,000 Canadians fought during the Korean War (1950-1953), and an additional 7,000 fought in the U.S. peacekeeping missions in Korea.   The Battle of Gapyeong was fought between the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade and the 118th division of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army in Gapyeong Valley over three days and two nights in April 1951. The 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, withstood heavy attacks in the valley by forces of the Chinese army, which had more than five times the number of troops, who were attempting to push forward and capture Seoul. At that time, Seoul, the capital of Korea, would have been in danger if it had not been able to stop the Chinese offensive in the battle. Isolated from other units of the British brigade and, at one point, surrounded by the enemy, the Patricia’s halted the enemy offensive and saved the capital.

나이아가라 폭포의 한국 전 기념비는 '캐나다의 가장 위대하지만 가장 덜 알려진 군사 업적 중 하나'를 기념합니다. 나이아가라 폭포 페어뷰 공동묘지, 한국전쟁 가평승전기념비 제막식 By 레이 스피테리 리뷰 리포터 2022년 6월 16일 목요일 캐나다의 한국전쟁 참전을 기념하는 기념비가 목요일 페어뷰 공동묘지에서 열린 기념식에서 제막됐다. 캐나다 가평전투 기념비 위원회, 캐나다 한국 참전용사 협회, 나이아가라 한인회 대표들은 나이아가라 폭포 시 직원들과 함께 9월부터 이상적인 장소를 선정하고 기념비를 만들고 설치하기 위해 노력해 왔습니다. 추모비는 김성기 가평군수가 기증한 대형 화강암 비석과 청동패 3개, 높이 9m의 깃대 3개로 구성돼 있다. 전 세계 한인 사회에 기증된 30개의 추모비 중 하나입니다. 김 군수는 “6·25전쟁, 특히 가평전투 당시 캐나다 군인들의 희생을 영원히 기억하고 싶다”며 “캐나다 한국전 참전용사들의 헌신과 봉사에 존경과 감사를 표한다”고 통역을 통해 말했 습니다. “오늘의 대한민국 발전은 여러분 덕분입니다. 64,000명의 가평 군민을 대표하여 특별한 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 이곳 6·25 가평 전승기념비가 앞으로 캐나다와 한국, 나이아가라 폭포와 가평, 한국계 캐나다인과 캐나다 국민 사이에 특별한 우의와 혈연이 더욱 굳건해지는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다. 나이아가라 폭포 시 묘지 관리인인 마크 리처드슨(Mark Richardson)은 한국 전쟁에서 한국군과 캐나다군이 연합하여 싸운 것을 인정하며 기념비가 역사적인 상징이 될 것이라고 말했습니다. 그는 “이 위대한 공적이 곧 알게되어 대를 이어 공유될 것”이라며 “한국전쟁에서 용감하게 싸운 이들을 추모하고  그들의 희생을 더 이상 잊히지 않도록 하는 이상적인 장소가 될 것”이라고 말했다. 기념비는 스탠리 애비뉴 공원 묘지의 무명용사 묘와 왕립 캐나다 군단 지부 51 기념비 옆에 위치해 있습니다. 김득환 총영사는 가평 전투는 “캐나다의 가장 위대하지만 아직 알려지지 않은 군사적 업적 중 하나입니다. “이 전투의 중대한 승리는 캐나다 군인들의 용감함과 끈질긴것 대한 증거입니다. 실제로 가평전투는 한국의 역사는 물론 전쟁의 방향도 바꿨다”고 말했습니다. “대한민국 정부와 국민은 희생과 헌신을 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다. 그들의 희생적인 성취가 양국 공유의 지속적인 우정의 토대를 마련했다고 믿어 의심치 않습니다.” 짐 디오데티(Jim Diodati) 나이아가라 폭포 시장은 페어뷰 공동묘지에서 기념비를 유치하게 된 것을 "매우 자랑스럽게 생각한다"고 말했으며, 이 프로젝트에 기여한 모든 관계자들에게 감사의 말을 전했습니다. 그는 “이는 다음 세대에 걸쳐 우리 지역사회의 평화와 우정의 상징이 될  것”이라고 말했습니다. 한국 전쟁(1950-1953) 동안 27,000명 이상의 캐나다인이 참전했으며 추가적으로 주한 미군 평화 유지군으로 7,000명이 참전 했습니다.   가평전투는 1951년 4월 가평 계곡에서 영연방 제27여단과 중국인민지원군 제118사단이 2박 3일 동안 벌인 전투이다. 패트리샤 공주 캐나다 경보병(PPCLI) 2대대는 서울을 진격하여 점령하려던 중공군의 5배가 넘는 병력이 계곡을 거세게 공격했다. 당시 한국의 수도 서울은 중공군의 공세를 막지 못했다면 위태로울 뻔했습니다. 영국 여단의 다른 부대들과 격리되어 있었고, 한 지점에서 적에게 둘러싸여 있던 패트리샤 부대는 적의 공격을 막아내고 수도를 구했습니다.
